Loch Ryan Native Oysters

Haematopus full with oysters

The oysters are breeding during the summer, and are best left alone as the meat becomes soft, and the oyster is weaker as they put their energy into reproducing. As the water cools, they become stronger, ready for 1st September, when they are ready for sale again.

We now have two boats in Loch Ryan, the one pictured above is called the "Haematopus", which is Latin for the bird the Oystercatcher. This boat was newly built in Co. Cork, Ireland in 1970, and has been in our family since.
